Sarah rounds up the indecipherable West London Tournament in Liverpool ...

The Newcastle Knights women’s first tournament was always set to be a rollercoaster of a day! The newly formed team included four complete ‘newbies’ amongst varying-experienced players.

The West London Challenge Cup presented their first (ever) game against West London 2’s, an impressive side, and a great match. The Knight’s put up a good 20-minute fight, with some key team communication lead by goalkeeper Nat. It wasn’t long before first home, Nic, scored the one and only goal of the match, finishing a 1-5 defeat.

Stockport was opponent number 2, and having beaten West London; the Knight’s determination was only elevated. Catherine kept the defence side strong, whilst beautiful attack play by Nikki secured the 1-4 result.

Match three and the team were keen for a win! Although Liverpool University were on their home ground, this didn’t put off Newcastle. The lightening speed of Celia, who powered through the opposition’s web of sticks, ensured midfield possession. The delighted Knight’s celebrated their first win with a fantastic 3-2 victory scored by Jenny, Claire and Nikki.

Following a 5-minute turn around, Newcastle finished against none other than the Welsh National lacrosse team the Welsh Dragons! Nat’s “wall of defenders” was put to the test throughout the game, with some impressive blocking from Helen and newcomers Fiona and Naomi. The Welsh team only managed 8 goals past Newcastle’s star goalie, Nat, who won joint woman of the match, along with Celia for her incredible stamina throughout the tournament, where does she get the energy from??

Best goal was awarded to Nic and Claire, a deserving duo and last, but not least, Helen Merson was awarded dick of the day for a most impressive fall!

All in all, a fantastic start to what is sure to be successful things to come for Women’s Newcastle Knights.
