Here's Margi with the latest match report from the Ladies....
This Saturday saw the women’s team host the final game of the 2013 calendar year. It promised to be an interesting match with Liverpool being in the same half of the table as Newcastle and the women having the home advantage.
It was indeed an interesting game, however it was for reasons Newcastle had not anticipated. Due to a lack of communication between the team, they found themselves without a goalkeeper and faced the prospect of hosting a match without a goal keeper.
Unfortunately no Christmas miracle happened at Cochrane Park this weekend and that was sadly the case. In true Newcastle lacrosse style the women did not let this minor issue dampen their spirits and they gave 100% effort for the full 60 minutes. Throughout the game the centre draw was evenly matched with Newcastle winning as many as Liverpool, Holly Furniss putting in a stellar performance and fighting for every ball.
Defensively Newcastle looked a lot better and held the ball out of the fan for the majority of the game, Liverpool only breaking through to score 16 goals. Which, considering Newcastle did not have a goal keeper, was an average effort from the Liverpool side. When Newcastle managed a turnover of possession, the ball was easily passed up field,
midfielder Georgia Villalobos being an integral part of this process, to the attack where the players were marked very closely by the Liverpool players.
However Newcastle did manage to score twice, with excellent shots from Lauren Natale and Holly Furniss. On the whole the match was less than ideal but Newcastle kept their heads up and gave all the effort they had. The re-match will be taking place on the 22nd February at Liverpool and we expect a very different outcome.
Final score Newcastle 2 – Liverpool 16.
