On Saturday 15th November the Newcastle women's team travelled to Manchester to face Brooklands in their second away match of the season.
It was fantastic to see the Newcastle side field a full team with an additional two substitutes, something the team have been aiming to do and strive to continue throughout the rest of the season. The team were unsure of the opposition's standard due to forfeiting their match against them last season, so went into the game confidently.
In the first half of the match Brooklands dominated, making good breaks in attack and tightly defending the ball when Newcastle gained possession. After a few minutes the Newcastle team got into the game, moving the ball up into the oppositions half. Centre player, Rachel Buckley managed to find space and drove to goal, the ball flew past the Brooklands keeper and into the top right hand corner of the goal. Although the Newcastle defenders pressurised when the ball was around goal, preventing some attempts being made, Brooklands fought back strongly and scored 13 goals.
Newcastle upped their game during the second half, maintaining possession, moving up the pitch and settling the ball around goal in an attempt to create more goal scoring opportunities. Rachel went on to score 2 more goals whilst Hannah Foxcroft scored the final goal for the team. The defence worked even harder during the second half, marking their players tightly and communicating more effectively allowing only 7 goals to be conceded.
The final score was 20-4. This score truly did not reflect the game, particularly after the performance of the Newcastle team in the second half. The team voted Rachel and Hannah as joint Man of the Match after their fantastic goals.
